Actually, I'd be more inclined to compare Gmail to "Notes" (webmail) than Outlook to Notes.
Outlook is a rich client, like Notes. On an apples to apples basis, it doesn't compete because it can't do 90% of what the Notes client does.
Gmail can (and should) ONLY be compared to Notes Webmail. It's a good example of the sort of clean, fast interface IBM should be striving to deliver on the web.
People are much more tolerant about a lack of rich client features on the web. The main concern is speed and usability.
